A bright and cold day between Christmas and the New Year found me painting this view into the setting sun from near Rivington in Lancashire. Painting like this, into a low bright sun, provides plenty of challenges, not least the eyestrain from squinting into the low sun itself. I learnt that the distant hills and building are all washed out and high-key tonally. The colour hues remain very pure and atmospheric, benefiting from being mixed with the very minimum of pigments.
