The winter rain has got into my paintings at last. For months I have been painting in bright colours but this painting and my previous painting have all been done in subdued, earthy colours.

Beech trees are my favourite trees — I love the way they crown this small hill in Rivington, Lancashire. Look at the way they have been sculpted into an aerodynamic wing shape by a century of blustery rain.

Oh yes, my studio has started leaking too. Will the rain never stop?
