Coming down from the fells is much harder on the knees than going up, and the descent down towards the Langdale Valley from Harrison Stickle really hurt! This painting was inspired by the descent from Pavey Ark, which is a long walk uphill, but then the descent back to the New Dungeon Ghyll hotel kicks in and can be a real slog. But what views over the Langdale Valley! On this bright day I was lucky, rewarded by dramatic views of scudding light over the valley bottom, with shafts of sunlight illuminating the fields in the valley below. A pair of walkers just ahead of me on the path added a sense of scale, always useful when painting these majestic fells.
