Painting and drawing the figure is always a tough job. One false brushstroke and the human eye can spot the mistake at once. So I try to practice, and practice frequently. Here’s a quick figure study from a photo. I use photos regularly to practice, especially when models are hard to find but nothing is quite as good as painting from the model.

As with many of many recent paintings, with this study I wanted to be very economical with my brushstrokes, capturing the essence of the figure without appearing laboured. Needless to say, I found it very difficult to make the painting appear effortless!
